Which way are we going?

“Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” ~ Amos 3:3

What is in a name?

At the risk of waxing poetic, we asked the same question. While it was Shakespeare who essentially noted that a rose by any other name would still be a rose, it pressed on us that a name, well-chosen, could convey identity and vision (both internally and externally). Therefore, we prayed and considered what name would serve to do that for us. Below, you will find a brief summary of why we chose “Pilgrim Life Bible Fellowship” and what was the Biblical basis of this name.

Pilgrim

To capture both our eternal hope and manner in which we should live in light of this.

9By faith [Abraham] lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. 12Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants AS THE STARS OF HEAVEN IN NUMBER, AND INNUMERABLE AS THE SAND WHICH IS BY THE SEASHORE.13All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. ~ Hebrews 11:9-13

17If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth ~ 1 Peter 1:17

11Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. ~ 1 Peter 2:11

Life

To embrace the “pilgrim” nature in  marking every part of our lives. As such, a Christian pilgrim’s life will be defined as passing though with a light touch, heavenly focused and destination oriented.

24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25“For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27“For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS. ~ Matthew 16:24-27

“Life” should also communicate the richness and power that is imparted to us
through the Spirit – organic, overflowing and real.

18I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. ~ Ephesians 1:18-21

Bible

To establish that we are guided by the Word of God on this journey as the
standard and ultimate authority on the course of life.

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. ~ Psalm 119:105

16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. ~ 2 Timothy 3:16

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. ~ Matthew 24:35

Fellowship

To communicate the nature of the meetings and the significance of the God ordained gathering of believers.

23Let’s hold firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24and let’s consider how to [i]encourage one another in love and good deeds, 25not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10:23-25

Pilgrim Life Principles

We Worship

The beautiful part about this journey is that we are able to worship while we walk, in fact it is the only way we should be travelling.  At Pilgrim Life, worship permeates all of our time together – the praises of our lips and the joyful sounds we offer our king are an overflow of His love that we express back to Him. Our services begin with a call to worship is song and we close our time together rejoicing and meditating on the time spent together in the presence of our King – Giving us a glimpse of our final destination!

We Pray

At Pilgrim Life, we are committed to embracing prayer not just as a ritual, but as a fundamental part of our daily lives and fellowship. Knowing our walk is one of faith, we cannot depend on ourselves to navigate our course; therefore, It is through prayer that we seek and find the guidance of God.  When we gather, we are intentional about making corporate prayer central to our time together. These moments of communion with God strengthen our faith and bond us more deeply with one another.

We Study

Every sojourner needs a map to help understand where they are and where they are going. The more certain the map, the more certain our steps can be. As pilgrims on a journey, we praise the Lord for His Word that serves as our perfect and sure standard . We are so convinced of this that we study the Bible together verse by verse, chapter by chapter and book by book. This ensures that we have a through understating of the way we are to go and how we are to get there.

We Serve

As we press forward to our eternal hope, we understand that the Lord is honoured in our journey. The pilgrim life requires work in order to live it well. You will find us considering the gifts that the Lord has given us and using them for His glory. We strive to exercise all our strength in the service of our King.

We Care

The road can be a lonely one. That is why we value the love of the fellowship. At Pilgrim Life we look to bless one another knowing we are travelling together. Whether it is a conversation and prayer over morning tea, or a visit  at home, we aim hope to come alongside each other in spiritual and practical ways. Towards those who have yet to begin their journey home, we offer the invitation to join us on the Way by calling them to turn around and believe on Christ!
